Ride: 25km; total: 1,270km
Fine and sunny early, with cloud closing in about 11:00am,
12-18deg
When we went downstairs at 7:00am everything was
locked. Took us till 8:00am to raise
someone and get breakfast. The owners
had slept in. It was worth waiting for though.
Headed out a bit late so we followed a minor road instead of
the winding river path. Not a great deal to see, a bit of nice rural
landscape but suburbia and industry mainly.
Got into Dusseldorf
about 11:30am. This is my fourth visit
to Dusseldorf. Graham obtained us a room via the tourist
office and we were booked in by midday. Great modern motel with nice décor
at 36euro each.
Dusseldorf
is a two part city, old and new, separated by a series of canal-type
structures. The city is an international
business and financial centre and renowned for its fashion and trade fairs.
The Rhine and the promenade, which runs along
the side of the old city, are lined with tour boats, cafes and restaurants on the shore.
Although fairly busy it is a place I enjoyed. The great little fresh food markets, parks,
wide traffic-free malls and gardens break up the city nicely.
During our wander we went into the free State Museum
which gave an excellent overview of the city's history dating back a couple of
thousand years when the Romans failed to take over from the local Germanic
tribes. It's good to know the Romans weren't always successful.
Then stumbled across a classic orchestra rehearsing in a
converted church. Lovely just to sit quietly for an hour and listen to
them.
For dinner it was fresh goulash soup for 3.50euro from the
Carlplatz Fresh Markets. It was very nice. Dessert was 100g of prawn salad.
Back to the motel and into bed about 8:30pm.
