DAY 47: MON 8 OCT - AMSTERDAM

Ride: 73km; total: 1,960km
Fine but cold in the morning and again in the late afternoon, 6-13deg

Decided not to go on the Army hospital visit with Wendy as they would be sitting around and discussing pharmacy business a lot.  So I headed out about 7:30am to do another ride, this time south.  I didn't feel like eating after the big Chinese duck last night so skipped breakfast. It was fairly cold, felt less than the 6deg forecast, but I had thermals on so I was warm enough.  I was soon in the country on the side of the main southern canal and ended up at Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, just outside of Amstelveen.  Got some meat, yoghurt and rolls at a supermarket for breakfast, but no coffee.  Then 100m up the track I found a lovely bakery/cafe where I could have had a nice hot breakfast.   Got a nice coffee there anyway, sitting at a window looking out over a canal and old bridge.  Didn't want to go out in the cold after that.   I then headed towards my main target Naarden, a UNESCO site for fortifications.

On the way I stopped at Bussum, nice town with a good feel, where I had two yummy pieces of fish for A$5.75.  It wasn't till then, 12:30pm, that I finally started to warm up.

Arrived at Naarden about 1:30pm and had a good wander around the moat and fort.  It was built in the 16th century and it was very big and impressive.  Like most holes in the ground in Holland the moats were full of water.

Headed back to Amsterdam and arrived at the motel at 4:20pm, fairly pleased with a good day’s ride. Wendy sent me a text to say she was going to a Japanese reception with Jane so would be late for our dinner appointment.

Ended up at the Chinese restaurant for dinner with the whole gang, 11 of us.  Wendy and I shared a Peking duck, it was lovely and so huge that we left half the third course.
